Tinubu launches $3.05bn poverty reduction, human capital programmes

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday launched five social intervention and development programmes valued at about $3.05 billion, aimed at reducing poverty, strengthening community resilience and improving access to healthcare and education across the country.

The programmes, unveiled in Abuja by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, on behalf of the President, include the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus Additional Financing (NG-CARES), the Solutions for Internally Displaced and Host Communities (SOLID) programme, and the Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity (HOPE) package, comprising HOPE-Gov, HOPE Primary Healthcare (PHC) and HOPE-Education.

Speaking at the launch, Tinubu said the initiatives were designed to ensure that the country’s recent economic gains translate into improved living standards for Nigerians.

“This is not just a set of programmes; these are promises kept,” the President said.

“Under our Renewed Hope Agenda, we came into office pledging to reform our economy, secure the nation and invest in our people. Today, we act on that pledge by protecting the vulnerable, empowering communities and building the human capital that will carry Nigeria forward.”

According to the President, NG-CARES will receive about $1.25 billion in additional financing from the World Bank to support smallholder farmers and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.

He said the SOLID programme, backed by $300 million in World Bank funding, would focus on improving the livelihoods of internally displaced persons and their host communities by linking humanitarian assistance with long-term development.Tinubu added that the $1.5 billion HOPE package would strengthen governance, primary healthcare, foundational education and teacher development.
